IN CABINETRY
Slimmed-down TVs haven’t done in
cabinetry. “The reality is, a flat-
panel is still just a big black screen
when it’s off,” Arthur says. “Placing
the TV in cabinetry softens the look
and helps it blend into your decor.”

A wall-spanning built-in with
the TV flush in the opening
provides a streamlined look
without shuttering away the TV.
Display shelves take the eye off
the screen. With any cabinet, the
TV should fill the opening, with a
few inches of ventilation on the
sides and top.

If you want the option of
enclosing the TV within a large
cabinet, look for folding pocket
doors that retract into the

opening. Pocket doors, as well as
doors that wrap around the sides of
freestanding cabinets, allow full
viewing and don’t take upfloor
space the way standard-hinged
swing-out doors do.

Sofas, chairs, and beds
vary in height—some
sit high, some low. To
determine eye-level
placement of your TV,
sit in the prime viewing
spot or lie in bed
with feet crossed (a
common obstruction).
Then have a helper use
painter's tape to mark
the outline of the TV
on the wall.
